MG Magnette

Once again we are celebrating a vehicle’s birthday.  This time it’s a 70th and the vehicle in question is Alan S’ 1956 MG Magnette ZA first registered 17th April 1956.

The MG Magnette ZA was manufactured between 1953-1956 and then the ZB was introduced in the second half of 1956-1958 when production ended in that shape.  The Mark III and Mark IV were built from 1959-1968 in the ‘Farina’ shape.

The Magnette ZA was designed by Gerald Palmer, designer of the  Jowlett Javelin. It was the first appearance of the new four cylinder 1,489 cc (90.9 cu in) B-series I4 engine with a pair of 1+1⁄4 in (32 mm)-bore twin-choke SU carburettors, delivering 68 bhp (45 kW), driving the rear wheels through BMC’s new four-speed manual gearbox with synchromesh on the top three ratios.  It also has drum brakes all round

The ‘B’ series engine went on to power the MGA @ 1622CC then was used again in the MGB @1800CC.

Alan bought the car in October 2024 from Spalding Lincolnshire where the previous owner had undertaken a partial restoration during the Covid lockdown.  The colour is Rover Smoked Grey with a burgundy interior.

Happy 70th birthday.
